My name is Kate Pitcher and I am currently a reference librarian and Coordinator of Collection Development at Milne Library on the campus of SUNY Geneseo, in the beautiful Genesee Valley south of Rochester, NY. I received my M.L.S. from the University at Buffalo in 1997 and have worked as a librarian in public (New York Public Library, Rochester Public Library) and academic (Genesee Community College and SUNY Geneseo) libraries.
I love my profession! Originally, I sought it out a year or so after college because I loved to read and thought -- hey, why not work in a library? How little I knew about libraries! Technology skills are rapidly becoming more important than a love of books, which I think is a reflection of society in general. Its the medium which is changing, not the information contained within. So it follows, that as librarians, we need to keep on top of those technological changes and teach our users the difference.
The medium is the message, as good 'ol Marshall McLuhan liked to say.
